BMCU Endowed Scholarships
An endowed scholarship is one of the most meaningful ways to invest in the future of Blue Mountain Christian University. These permanent funds provide annual support to deserving students while preserving the original gift, allowing your generosity to make an impact year after year.
Whether you choose to build upon an existing scholarship or establish a new one, your gift helps remove financial barriers and opens doors for students called to learn, grow, and serve.
Each endowed scholarship tells a story. Some honor a life of service. Others reflect a personal journey shaped by faith, sacrifice, and perseverance. All share a common purpose: removing financial barriers so students can pursue their education, deepen their faith, and prepare for lives of service.
Many donors choose to support an established endowed fund, increasing its annual impact and helping it reach or maintain fully funded status. These gifts honor the original intent of the scholarship while expanding its ability to serve more students.
By contributing to an existing endowed scholarship, you become part of an ongoing legacy that reflects shared values, faith, and commitment to Christian education.
The following existing scholarships were increased substantially during Fiscal Year 2023-24 by donors, family members, and friends:
- Arlena Pearl Smith Hasel Memorial Endowed Grant
- Carter Lyceum Concert Series
- Dr. Rex and Ellon Yancey Endowed Scholarship for Teachers, Preachers, and Healers
- Kennith Kirk Music Scholarship
- Mary B. (Lake) Cocke Scholarship
- Maudie Seawright Jackson STEM Scholarship
- Reuben and Ada Sue Wages Greer Scholarship
Creating a new endowed scholarship allows you to shape a legacy that reflects your story, values, or the life of someone you wish to honor. Scholarships may be named and tailored to support students based on academic focus, financial need, character, ministry calling, or other meaningful criteria.
A new endowed scholarship provides lasting support to BMCU students while advancing the University’s mission for generations to come.
During the 2023-2024 fiscal year, three new endowed scholarships were established:
Betty Potts Gifford Scholarship This scholarship was established by her daughter, Sharon Gifford Cheek. Betty was a 1960 graduate of Blue Mountain College majoring in Business Education. She served as a member of the Eunomian Society and president of the Inter-Faith Club. During college, she worked full- time in the university library where she enjoyed getting to know many of her peers. During her junior year, Betty was crowned May Queen at Blue Mountain’s annual May Day event. After graduation, Betty began a career as a business education teacher at Macedonia High School. Later, Betty worked for the American Seating Company as an accountant. Those closest to Betty appreciate her generous spirit, kind nature, willingness to help, sunny disposition, and how she embodied the fruits of the spirit. The scholarship is awarded annually to deserving students with financial need.
Mary Rachel Lowry Scholarship This scholarship was endowed by Mary Rachel Lowry Reavis. She attended Blue Mountain College as the daughter of a Baptist minister who pastored a church in a small town in Mississippi. As such, her education was not without a degree of financial hardship. This scholarship is awarded to deserving female students from Mississippi on the basis of good scholarship with at least a 3.5 GPA, fine character, and the need for financial assistance with preference given to female students with a parent who is an ordained Christian minister.
Jennifer Blasingame Lowrey Scholarship This scholarship was established by friends and family of Jennifer Blasingame Lowrey, the wife of former BMCU athletic director, Will Lowrey. The details and endowment status are currently pending.
